With more than 200 years of history, Tredudwell now has many more wedding memories
Tredudwell has been in the family since 1810 and we are so happy to have dedicated this last decade to putting the Estate back on track by renovating the house, adding new buildings and projects, turning the farmland organic and really creating a little hub of activity within our little rural community! The Cornwall wedding venue history of Tredudwell makes for fascinating reading – a sprawling family history stretching back centuries, involving inheritance, marriage and confusing name changes. At least four of Justin’s male ancestors married heiresses for money and had to take their names.
1850
The estate included 14,500 acres; the main accommodation was Ethy House, at nearby Lerryn, but this was sold by Justin’s great-aunt. His grandfather, Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Shakerley, made Tredudwell his home; the current house was built in 1705, but parts are thought to date back to the 14th century. Peter donated a good deal of land to the National Trust, including the famed Hall Walk from the Bodinnick Ferry, and coastal acreage to Project Neptune in the 1950s.
2004 - The Bed & Breakfast opens
Justin inherited the Estate from his father, it was in poor shape and in needs of extensive and expensive repairs. Justin took out a small bank loan and opened up three rooms on a bed and breakfast basis, running it by himself. It was quite a challenge, as the roof was so bad, Justin had pots and pans in the attic to catch the drips, and had to dash upstairs to make sure they didn’t overflow in bad weather.
2008 - 2011 - A Beautiful Adventure
Justin & Valerie met in Cornwall. Valerie grew up in the Alpine ski resort of Valmorel and having worked for a record company in Paris, she had come to Plymouth to improve her English.
Together, we made the decision to gut one side of the house, making good previous quick fixes: concrete repairs to chimneys were putting huge pressure on the roof, while dormer windows were close to collapse. We lived in the attic, which had no glazing in the windows. Having done one side, the other had to match. We did most of the donkey work ourselves, and the professional help we needed came from within the immediate vicinity. We project managed the whole thing, which was very satisfying. We just did not know then, that this was just the start of the most beautiful adventure.
2014 - The Luxury B&B with marquee weddings
We achieved what we had always wanted for the house; a luxury B&B that everyone can enjoy, creating happiness from dust and rubble, revealing the beauty and allowing everyone to share it with us. However, it was not quite enough; we had so many enquiries for hosting weddings on our marquee lawn that our garden could not recover quickly enough between weddings.
We have hosted weddings for about 10 years, marquee weddings were our thing then and proved to be quite a challenge with our great British weather. However, we really liked it, so much so that we wanted to carry on developing our experience and working on offering the best bespoke approach without being limited by the change of seasons.
2016 - Beautiful Barn Weddings
It was the time to really go for it! Let’s build a state of the art, purposely designed wedding venue! We opened the wooden doors of our Pavilion, our barn wedding venue sits in an elevated position alongside the house, in harmony with the surrounded landscape and the listed manor house.
