Josh, how do you assist couples in choosing the right wines for their Cornwall wedding reception?
“We are a trade specialist wine merchant, so assisting our customers with pairing the perfect wines with food menus is what we do every day! We use our experience of both the wine industry and the hospitality industry to make sure every palate and budget is happy. There’s always matches to be made when it comes to wine for a wedding, whether it’s the style of food, a particular country or region that is close to heart, or mother of the bride’s penchant for Chardonnay! We try and ask the right questions, in order to make wine suggestions to couples and of course encourage tasting before any decisions are made!”
And can you give some popular wine pairing with Cornish lamb? Local Cornish fish? Or vegetarian based dishes?
“Lamb is very wine-friendly and is a great match for reds. Roast lamb, in particular, is ideal with Smooth and Powerful style reds such as a classic Bordeaux or a Portuguese red from the Douro. They say what grows together, goes together! So for us, there’s no better pairing for Cornish fish than deliciously crisp Cornish white wine. Polgoon Estate near Penzance, make the UK’s first Sauvignon Blanc which gives crunchy fresh, green apple and tropical fruits with a distinctly Cornish minerality provided by the granite-based soil.
Vegetables, and vegetarian foods in general, are very versatile with wine. Generally, Crisp and Rich style whites or Fruity and Smooth style reds will pair well with vegetable based dishes. Why not try either a young Austrian Grüner Veltliner or a smooth Chilean Carmenère?”
